Zoological celebrity passes away at 19 years old
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Schroder, the much-loved Berber lion who played a significant role in the preservation of his species, has passed away at the age of 19.
Born in Neuwied Zoo in May 2006, Schroder took on the role of breeding male from 2010. Over the years, he sired thirteen healthy cubs, contributing to the growth of the Berber lion population across Europe. His lineage will continue through his numerous descendants who now reside in zoos and wildlife parks across the continent.
Schroder's life was not without challenges. Pathology results from Giessen confirm that he had several age-related issues, including degenerative changes in the brain, kidneys, and multiple disc herniations. Despite these difficulties, his quality of life was maintained as best as possible, and his euthanization was carried out to spare him further suffering. The vet performed the procedure in familiar surroundings, ensuring Schroder's last moments were peaceful.
Schroder was named after a long-serving carnivore keeper who had recently passed away. His first cub was born in the city after the arrival of Berber lions from Morocco, making him a symbol of hope and continuity for the species.
Currently, Schroder's enclosure at Neuwied Zoo is left vacant, with the 14-year-old lioness Zari being the only resident. The future of the Berber lion holding at the zoo will be discussed in the coming weeks in consultation with the EAZA ex-situ program.
Mirko Thiel, the zoo director, expressed his condolences, stating that Schroder's quality of life had deteriorated rapidly, and he would not have survived in the wild. Thiel also highlighted Schroder's invaluable contribution to the preservation of the Berber lion species.
Schroder's passing marks the end of an era at Neuwied Zoo, but his legacy will live on through his descendants and the fight against the eventual extinction of the Berber lions. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his story will serve as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts for endangered species.
