Wright's final residence has finally been constructed, offering lodging opportunities for visitors
In the suburbs of Willoughby Hills, Ohio, the RiverRock House stands as a testament to the enduring influence of architectural legend Frank Lloyd Wright. Completed in 2025, this three-bedroom, two-bathroom home was built based on Wright's final and previously unrealized design, Project #5909.
RiverRock, clad in river rock and nestled on 30 acres of land, boasts heated floors, a wood-burning fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling glass in the living areas, all of which are characteristic of Wright's designs. The interior features natural materials like stone and wood, offering a contemporary glimpse into Wright's world.
The house, available for rent, offers seven-night stays starting at $5,500, with overnight stays costing $800 on weekdays and $1,000 on weekends. However, it is important to note that the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy have not officially recognised RiverRock as an authentic Wright building, labelling it as an 'interpretation' and 'derivative'.
The original plans for Project #5909 were purchased by Sarah Dykstra in 2018, who also acquired the Louis Penfield House, a property designed by Wright in 1955 for a 6ft 8in tall client. The Louis Penfield House, unlike RiverRock, was not destroyed by Interstate 90 and is also available for rent.
While RiverRock maintains the low volumes, natural materials, and organic feel of Wright's Usonian dream, it deviates from his original plans due to contemporary building standards. This is because RiverRock was constructed 66 years after Wright's death, making it a faithful posthumous realization rather than an original Wright building constructed under his own supervision or during his lifetime.
The story of RiverRock's construction and its connection to Wright's designs are documented in the Magnolia Network series "The Last Wright", providing a fascinating insight into the effort to honour Wright's architectural principles. Despite not being officially recognised as an authentic Wright building, RiverRock offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience Wright's design philosophy in a modern context.
