Renovation of Otter Enclosure Begins at Leipzig's Wildpark

Leipzig, Germany - A significant transformation is underway at Leipzig's Wildpark as the renovation of the otter enclosure commences. Located in the heart of Leipzig, this popular destination for families and nature lovers covers approximately 46 hectares and is home to around 250 animals, including approximately 25 native species.

The renovation project involves a comprehensive overhaul of the enclosure. The bank will be redesigned using natural stones, and resting and lounging areas will be created from roots and woods. The pond will be cleaned and resealed, and native, site-appropriate plants will be introduced to create a more natural environment for the otters.

The otter enclosure, upon completion, will be opposite the deer enclosure. The resident female otter, a solitary animal with strong territorial behaviour, will return to the newly redesigned enclosure on the main path of Leipzig's Wildpark. During the works, she will temporarily retreat behind the scenes.

The renovation is expected to cost approximately 100,000 euros. For more information about the Wildpark, visit www.leipzig.de/wildpark.

As of August 2025, the progress and details of the otter enclosure renovation are not publicly documented or reported in available sources. For detailed, up-to-date information, it is recommended to contact Wildpark Leipzig or the Leipzig city parks authority directly.

The otters' new home-and-garden, completed with natural stones and root-made lounging areas, promises a lifestyle upgrade for the wildlife at Leipzig's Wildpark. Upon completion, the otter enclosure, designed to mimic a more natural environment with native plants, will be situated opposite the deer enclosure.
