Urban melodies resonating through cityscapes
Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, is set to undergo a transformation as LLP Astana Zelenstroy plans to expand its greening efforts in the district by 2026. The aim is to enhance the urban environment, improve living conditions, and boost the city's resilience to climate change.
Key Initiatives and Numbers
LLP Astana Zelenstroy's plans include the planting of over 11,000 trees, more than 14,000 ornamental shrubs, and the installation of 130,000 linear meters of living fence. This year, the company has already planted 281 decorative shrubs in the district.
The greening efforts have extended to several streets, including Munaitypov Street, Nurmagambetov Street, Balkantau Street, Ainakol Street, Amman Street, and Momyshuly Avenue. By 2026, the scale of greening in the district is expected to be significantly expanded.
Landscaping and Plant Selection
A vibrant array of plants has been used to landscape the flower beds, including petunia, salvia, tangerine, cat's whiskers, cineraria, pelargonium, decorative cabbage, and decorative grasses. The plant selection is based on their decorative value, shape of the crown, height, flowering, and adaptability to urban conditions.
Challenges and Solutions
Despite the ambitious plans, challenges remain. Delays in delivery from unscrupulous suppliers, issues due to underground utility networks, and adverse weather conditions are some of the main challenges in the greening process. To mitigate these issues, part of the planting material is purchased from specialized suppliers, and the company operates its own nurseries to grow a significant portion of the planting material.
Maintenance and Community Involvement
All planted green plantings are transferred to the balance of district akimats for maintenance contracts. LLP Astana Zelenstroy carries out activities such as watering, mineral fertilization, weeding, loosening of the root circle, pruning, treatment against pests and diseases.
The company also encourages community involvement, with events like citizen planting days and school programs to foster environmental awareness.
Looking Forward
With a focus on creating a greener, healthier, and more livable Almaty, LLP Astana Zelenstroy's expansion plans represent a significant step towards urban sustainability. By combining large-scale planting, innovative green infrastructure, and community participation, the city could become a model for urban sustainability in Central Asia by 2026.
