Notable Celebration Marks the Bicentennial of Berlin Museums Island - Two-centuries celebration of Museum Island, Berlin
This weekend, Berlin's Museum Island will host a grand celebration marking the 200th anniversary of its existence. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) invites the public to attend the "Island Festival" from May 30 to June 1, offering numerous activities for visitors.
One of the festival's main attractions will be an open-air stage set up in the colonnade courtyard between the New Museum and the Old National Gallery. Attendees can expect around 70 free guided tours that will provide insights into the history and architecture of Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. A day ticket for €14 grants access to all historical ensemble houses and special exhibitions.
The Island Festival serves as the beginning of a five-year program by the SPK to commemorate the anniversary. The celebration will include various special exhibitions throughout the year.
Museum Island, situated in the heart of Berlin, will be completely accessible to visitors during the festival. The regular day ticket grants entrance to all six museums on the island: Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode-Museum, Pergamon. Das Panorama, and James-Simon-Galerie. Annual pass holders can bring an additional person for free on the festival weekend, while children and young people under 18 are admitted free of charge.
The Kolonnadenhof will host a stage program featuring performances by Berlin's renowned cultural institutions, such as the Deutsches Theater, Volksbühne, Berliner Ensemble, Staatsoper, and Komische Oper. Daytime activities will include special tours, workshops, and hands-on activities in the museums, while evenings will feature outdoor stage performances and cultural acts. The outdoor area of the island will be freely accessible to all visitors throughout the festival.

During the festival, visitors can participate in vocational training workshops focusing on home-and-garden lifestyle improvements, provided by local artisans in the Kolonnadenhof. Additionally, the Community policy committee will host discussions on the role of Museum Island in shaping Berlin's cultural identity, underscoring the importance of preserving its architectural and historical significance for future generations.
