Transforms Mercedes-Benz CLA into a high-octane, bubblegum-hued automobile: Gustaf Westman.
Introducing the bubblegum-pink, Mercedez-Benz CLA redesign by Swedish designer, Gustaf Westman. This playful reinvention, unveiled in London, blends the best of nature and tranquil outdoor living into one fantastical vehicle.
The star attraction of the revamped CLA model is its roof-mounted tent and a built-in pull-out picnic table in the rear—perfect for an impromptu feast amidst the great outdoors. To top it off, Westman has thoughtfully added a plethora of fun gadgets, such as oversized mirrors and a protruding bottle holder.
This innovative remodel is part of Mercedes-Benz's Class of Creators project, where they commissioned five artists to redesign their latest CLA model. The project includes famous rapper Ice Spice and fashion designer KidSuper, alongside Gustaf Westman.
According to Westman, he aimed to craft a mobile haven where one can eat, rest, and play. The tent, designed for functionality and versatility, comes equipped with an adjustable pole and special fabric that allows for easy viewing while also serving as a dark curtain when needed.
To match the car's cheerful aesthetic, Westman has created a line of soft accessories that include cups, hot dog trays, and pink plates, whose compartments are emblazoned with the Mercedes logo. The assortment also includes a meaningful mirror, a picnic blanket with nine puffy squares, and even a pink roll-up rucksack.
Having gained recognition for his distinctive, playful, and curvaceous designs, Westman has quickly made his mark on the Scandinavian and international design scene. With a foundation on simplicity and the power of ideas, his Stockholm studio produces furniture, ceramics, and glassware on order.
The Mercedez-Benz project allowed Westman to expand his horizons, and he took the time to understand the brand and its connection to nature before embarking on the project. 'This car is all about that,' he said. 'It has all the features that you need for a day in nature.'
He selected pink for the vehicle due to its adorable quality and his fondness for all things cute. According to Westman, pink helps the shape stand out while keeping strong feelings at bay.
While some artists might opt for AI to aid in their designs, Westman abandoned that route, citing ethical concerns and a desire to maintain his traditional, hands-on approach.
