Transforming the Kitchen Window Obstruction as Per Homeowners' Request Successfully Enhanced the Dramatic Appearance of a Prominent Dublin Dwelling
Interior designer Róisín Lafferty has breathed new life into a modern semi-detached home in a suburb of Dublin. Known for creating captivating, personalised environments, Lafferty's latest project showcases her signature style of celebrating existing features, adding bold contrasting materials, and prioritising functional, family-oriented spatial layouts.
One of the most striking features of the home is the creative use of arches. They appear on the floors, lights above the living area, and the curve of the storage next to the kitchen island. This architectural detail, repeated 25 times throughout the house, adds a unique touch to the interior design.
Lafferty's design style, which includes the lavish use of stone, contemporary shapes, and boldly saturated colors, is evident in the warm, jewel-toned palette. Rich plum paint on the ceilings and walls complements the green marble used in the home, creating a sophisticated, luxurious atmosphere reminiscent of the '70s but interpreted in a modern way.
The spatial layout and interior architecture were also given a significant overhaul. The unloved "dumping ground" room between the kitchen extension and front room was transformed into a music room, while the attic was opened up to be a hang-out area for the kids. The visual flow in the home was improved by removing obstructions such as orange-y timber doors and a jutting staircase.
Detail and materiality are key aspects of Lafferty's design. The first stair tread in the home was made from the same terrazzo as the floor, while a shell-inspired light pendant and a white terrazzo-look side table are available for purchase to add to the terrazzo theme.
The kitchen, described as rich and opulent due to Lafferty's love of crafting stone, is now a favourite space for the family. The kitchen window was filled in, causing the family to spend more time in the red travertine kitchen.
