Top Blue Hydrangea Types: Spectacular Blue Hydrangea Varieties for a Garden Jeweled with Sapphires

Hey there, plant enthusiasts! If you're after giant flowers that'll make a splash in your garden, look no further than blue hydrangeas. These bad boys are the workhorses of my garden, surviving everything from chilly Basque Country winters to San Francisco's foggy climate. And let's be honest, who doesn't love a flower that's bigger than your face?

Now, I know many folks fancy pinks, greens, or bright whites, but blue hydrangeas have my heart. If you're craving a better blue garden or just want to inject some more hue into your landscape, here are my top choices for the most luminous and enduring blue hydrangea varieties.

Sick of the same old pinks and whites? These babies will breathe new life into your garden. From passionflowers so fresh they'll make you want to forget your worries, to indigo berries that'll make you the envy of the neighborhood, blue is where it's at. The Most Dazzling Blue Hydrangea Varieties

Ready to feel like you've died and gone to blue hydrangea heaven? Both mophead and mountain hydrangeas (aka lacecaps) have blue-blooming cultivars available. And here's the best part: you don't always need to adjust the soil pH to grow blue hydrangeas. So, let's dig in!

1. Endless Summer 'Bloomstruck'

The Endless Summer line is all about non-stop blooms from June till the end of summer. 'Bloomstruck' is no slouch, sporting deep blue mophead flowers all summer long on shrubs that climb up to 4 feet tall and wide. Plus, 'Bloomstruck' stems are a striking dark red, adding a pop of color to these crown jewel blue hydrangeas.

Like all mopheads, 'Bloomstruck' is a breeze to grow and hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Although it's technically hardy in zones 4-8, I've got plenty of happy mopheads living it up in foggy zone 10 San Francisco! Also, be sure to check out 'Twist 'N' Shout,' another killer blue variety in our platform Shop.

2. Tuff Stuff 'Ah-Ha'

If you're looking for a hydrangea that'll just keep on flowering, look no further. 'Tuff Stuff Ah-Ha' is the flowering machine of mountain hydrangeas, reblooming like crazy with water lily-like double florets all summer long.

Flowers will be cool blue if you plant it in acidic soil, but they'll lean pink if you plant it in alkaline soil. This hardy bush is also a dwarf, maxing out at 3 feet tall. It's a must-have for smaller gardens, with a graceful, mounding habit that's irresistible.

3. 'Nikko Blue'

This big leaf hydrangea is a fantastic choice for a rounded shrub. It can get up to 6 feet tall and wide, depending on how much you prune it. I personally trim mine to 3 feet for a low, flowering hedge. And the large, rounded panicles of flowers will be either blue or pink, depending on whether you plant it in acidic soil.

'Nikko Blue' produces generous clusters of flowers that'll last from June all the way into July. As long as you don't make a major mistake with your soil pH, you'll be treated to beautiful deep, cerulean blue flowers that last for two months or more.

4. Blue Wave (also known as 'Mariesii Perfecta')

I get it - adjusting your soil pH to grow blue hydrangeas ain't for everyone. If you want to skip that step and still get gorgeous blue blooms, Blue Wave hydrangea is your guy. It grows best in rich, well-drained soil with a bit of shade, and requires minimal pruning. It'll even flower in lower USDA zones if you plant it in a protected location and offer it a bit of winter protection.

5. 'Blaumeise' (Blue Titmouse)

Lacecap hydrangeas are awesomesauce, with their flattened clusters of dainty small florets surrounded by larger, showy flowers. Not only are they beautiful, they're also the best flowering bushes you can grow. The 'Blaumeise' cultivar is known for being one of the best lacecaps. It tops out at 5 feet, making it a great fit for smaller gardens.
