Artistic Flair Transforms 19th Century Townhouse in Manhattan's West Village
Yael Aflalo, an American fashion entrepreneur, has given a fresh lease of life to a 19th-century townhouse in one of Manhattan's most beautiful neighborhoods. The 740 square meter property, spread over six floors, has been meticulously redesigned by the power couple in interior design, Charlotte de Tonnac and Hugo Sauzay, known for their firm Festen.
The living room, a testament to Festen's signature style, is a harmonious blend of travertine, oak, bronze, and brass elements, all designed for longevity. Creamy white lime plaster walls serve as a pristine backdrop for an array of artworks, including a metal sculpture by Danish artist Tal R and a large abstract painting by Austrian artist Martha Jungwirth.
A dark burgundy velvet sofa, Swedish vintage chairs with harlequin patterns, and a Carlo Mollino 'Suora' floor lamp add a touch of elegance to the living space. The living room design also boasts a smart alternative to a kitchen island, a kitchen peninsula, which remains unchanged and faces the garden.
The interior design team, working in collaboration with artisans from Belgium, France, and Kyoto, has created a sense of lightness and individuality throughout the townhouse. The staircase banisters, bronze coffee table, and master bedroom headboard are just a few examples of the exquisite craftsmanship that adorns the property.
The master bedroom headboard features a cracked ecru pattern, applied layer by layer by a lacquer artist from Kyoto, adding a unique and artistic touch to the room. The master suite also boasts two terraces, offering breathtaking views of the city.
Steven Harris Architects were commissioned for the renovation, and the project saw Festen's team working closely with Yael Aflalo and her husband, Ludvig Frösen, who gave them free rein to choose which artisans they wanted to work with. Ludvig, whose parents are the renowned artists Gunnar Frössen and Yvonne Bengtsson, brings a keen artistic eye to the project.
The backyard of the townhouse, also renovated by Thomas Whitesides, now features a large pool, something unusual for the West Village. This luxurious addition, along with the meticulous interior design, has transformed the townhouse into a truly unique and stunning property.
