Plant Heritage Launches Threatened Plant Competition
Plant Heritage is on a mission to uncover more rare plants this year, and they're calling for public help to make it happen. The organisation has launched its annual Threatened Plant of the Year competition, with the deadline for entries set for April 30.
The winner of this competition will be announced on the first day of the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, which takes place from July 1-6. This year's festival is shaping up to be a special one, with gardening stars Rachel de Thame, Adam Frost, and Frances Tophill from BBC Gardener's World set to appear on stage. A VIP cream tea with Rachel de Thame or Adam Frost can be booked for £134 at the festival.
But what exactly are they looking for? The competition is for named cultivars that cannot be bought from any nursery, garden center, or similar, but were grown or sold in the UK or Ireland before 2015. Gwen Hines, CEO of Plant Heritage, explains that many plants, including some considered common, could be at risk of disappearing from our gardens if they aren't cared for.
Entries for the competition can be submitted at plantheritage.org.uk.
Meanwhile, the platform's website is currently undergoing a change, with a new version of the Quiz of the Day becoming available at 5pm.
In other news, the RHS Malvern Spring Festival (May 8-11) has become increasingly popular. Gardening enthusiasts can look forward to seeing Alan Titchmarsh, Mark Diacono, and Raymond Blanc among the guests at this year's event.
Elsewhere in the world of property, the Burj Khalifa penthouse apartment in Dubai is up for sale at a staggering £40 million. The apartment, marketed as 'the world's highest residential property' by IDRE, spans 21,000sq ft and comes with a private lift, epic views, and 12 parking spaces. However, it's currently a shell and needs £4 million to be kitted out, with pictures available only as CGI mock-ups.
The current penthouse apartments for sale in the Burj Khalifa, Dubai, include options such as a 4-bedroom luxury penthouse and a 2-bedroom plus study apartment priced at approximately 5.5 million AED. Other luxury penthouses in nearby prestigious towers are priced upwards of 7 million to 12.8 million AED, with amenities including branded finishes, beachfront access, and panoramic views.
