Düsseldorf's Green Initiatives: "Grey out, Green in" and "Ground Air" Competition

Shift from gray to green

In an effort to make the city more environmentally friendly, Düsseldorf is encouraging associations, people, and companies to participate in the "Grey out, Green in" and "Ground Air" actions. These initiatives aim to unseal surfaces across the city, giving nature more space and enhancing the cityscape.

The "Grey out, Green in" action is a proposal by the Pro Düsseldorf association, the Provinzial, and the city. The idea was inspired by the successful 'Tegelwippen' action in the Netherlands. By breaking up sealed surfaces, the city hopes to redevelop urban spaces, improve air quality, and mitigate urban heat islands.

The "Ground Air" competition offers financial support for private engagement in the unsealing action. Citizens who unseal surfaces in their garden or courtyard can receive funding from the city, with a payout of 25 euros per square meter unsealed, starting from a minimum of five square meters. An accompanying short film shows the step-by-step process of unsealing a sealed surface, making it easy for anyone to get involved.

Mayor Stephan Keller encourages citizens to transform sealed surfaces into green oases. Mobility and Environment Commissioner Jochen Kral emphasizes that climate adaptation measures are an important building block for Düsseldorf to counter the effects of climate change.

Participants in the "Ground Air" competition can also win attractive prizes until October 21. The Provinzial insurance company is encouraging participation, offering a chance to win a garden makeover worth 5,000 euros.
