Restored Glory: A Glimpse into the Transformed Park Theater of Lafayette after a $12 Million Makeover

The historic Park Theater in Lafayette, California is undergoing a significant $12 million renovation, transforming the long-vacant venue into a bustling arts and community center.

The project, spearheaded by the nonprofit Park Theatre Trust, includes the addition of two movie screens, each equipped with plush, removable velvet seating to accommodate live events and music performances. But that's not all; the renovation also features a community center, a restaurant, and a rooftop bar, making it a hub for social gatherings.

The restoration of original Art Deco elements is a key focus. This includes the preservation of the iconic marquee and box office, as well as the restoration of teardrop chandeliers in the lobby. The exterior of the building will be lengthened by 22 feet for added space.

The interior of the theater currently shows extensive water damage and some graffiti, but the renovation will breathe new life into the space. Lighting and other elements will pick up the Art Deco concept and carry it through to the screens themselves. Concept photos show renovated theater spaces with rows of seats that echo the original style of the theater.

The Trust has saved and is renovating some of the original Art Deco lighting and other elements from the theater. The new space is projected to open in 2026, offering multi-generational programming combining film, live music, and community events. The city, the library, and the chamber of commerce are significant partners in this endeavour.

The renovation will also include new lighting, a renovated entryway, and a Deco-inspired mural in the lobby. The intention is to make the theater a community space, with a rooftop bar area for drinks and food.

The renovation will also include the addition of a solar array, making it a sustainable space, and the city's only rooftop terrace. The Trust is still fundraising for the project, and you can give or find other ways to help.

The newsletter is built with Kit, and the Art Deco marquee out front will be preserved as part of the renovation. The Park Theater is set to become a beacon of community engagement and artistic expression in Lafayette.
