Renovated Velbert Church: A Look at its Post-Renovation State
The Old Church at Velbert's Market Square resumes operation following a comprehensive renovation, unveiling a rejuvenated Ibach organ. Having undergone five years of restoration, the instrument now resonates with a sound akin to new.
Upon entry, the outside noise fades away, replaced by the melodious sounds emanating from the organ, played by organist Frank Schreiber. The renovation costs amounted to a significant sum, part of which was covered by the federal government, with the remaining balance borne by the municipality.
Initially, the Ibach organ, dating back to 1869, was only intended for a clean-up every 20 years. However, the heritage protection office insisted on a complete restoration to its original state. The organ had been altered in 1939 and 1962, a departure from its initial design, with some pipes replaced, and original porcelain heads swapped for plastic ones. All these modifications were reversed during the restoration process.
The renovation process involved some unexpected and costly repairs. Hidden rot was discovered behind the organ and on certain beams, necessitating replacement. Moreover, evidence of a past lightning strike on the roof was uncovered, necessitating further repairs. Besides these unanticipated works, planned repairs to church windows, entrances, and the creation of an ideal room climate suitable for the organ were carried out.
Various fundraising methods were employed to cover the costs, including the sale of sponsorships for organ pipes. The church aims to be more than just a venue for services, intending it to be a platform for cultural interactions.
The grand reopening service will take place on June 8th at 11 am, followed by a festival around the church. A series of events, including concerts, choir performances, and special themed evenings, are planned from June to mid-July to celebrate the church's revival.
Velbert, situated in the Düsseldorf-Essen-Wuppertal city triangle, is known for its industrial history and cultural attractions. The Old Church, with its restored Ibach organ, is set to become a significant cultural hub in the region. For more details about the events, the program is available at the churches and community centers.
Amidst the revitalization, Velbert's Old Church will integrate a home-and-garden store selling sustainable living products, aiming to embrace an eco-friendly lifestyle within the church's community. With the renovated Ibach organ serving as a heartbeat, the transformed church will not only cater to religious gatherings but also offer a platform for cultural and environmental education.
