Reduced dental expenses for senior citizens in Sweden's government plan

Affordable Dental Care for Seniors in Sweden

Starting January 1, 2026, a new dental reform in Sweden will significantly reduce the cost of dental care for people aged 67 and above. The reform aims to make dental care more accessible and affordable by requiring individuals to pay only 10% of the cost for common treatments, with the state covering the remaining 90%.

This reform is expected to decrease the average annual cost for dental visits among the elderly from 4,600 kronor to 1,900 kronor, a reduction of more than half. For example, if a filling costs 1,200 kronor, the patient will only pay 120 kronor out-of-pocket, with the state covering the rest.

To prevent private dentists from inflating prices due to the state's subsidy, dentists will be required to adhere to government-established reference prices for treatments each year. These reference prices will be fixed annually for each type of treatment.

The reform aligns dental care subsidies for the elderly more closely with the subsidies already in place for general healthcare. It was jointly proposed by the Government and the Sweden Democrats as part of the Tidö agreement and has been welcomed by political leaders who highlight the social importance of making dental care affordable for seniors.

Under the reform, over-67s will only have to pay 10% of the cost of common dental treatments like fillings, tooth removal, or implants. Some routine checks and dental examinations will continue to be covered under the current system of dental subsidies and high-cost protection.

Sweden's health and social affairs minister, Jakob Forssmed, stated that the urgency of this proposal is understood by everyone who needs dental care. At a press conference, the government displayed a slide showing the difference in expected annual dental spending with the reform (grey) and without it (black).

Private doctors will not be able to charge more than the fixed reference prices for each treatment. The reform is intended to ensure that dental care remains affordable and accessible for all seniors in Sweden.
