**Speyer Cathedral Undergoes Comprehensive Restoration**

Speyer Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant Romanesque structures globally, is currently undergoing a comprehensive restoration project. The renovation aims to preserve the cathedral's architectural integrity while addressing various structural issues.

One of the key aspects of the restoration is the focus on the large Schraudolph painting in the entrance hall. A student is working on a restoration concept for this important piece of art, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

The renovation also includes the installation of a new choir platform, funded by generous donations. The platform has been designed to harmonise function and aesthetics, further enhancing the cathedral's beauty.

However, the restoration work is not without its challenges. The Romanesque east towers are crumbling, and the entire water management system needs to be redesigned. Heavy rain has been pressing against overwhelmed pipes, causing significant damage. New gutters are being installed to address this issue, and the cost for the first construction phase on the southeast tower is 1.2 million euros.

The restoration team is also dealing with decayed concrete ceilings from the 1930s, which need to be removed. In addition, plaster can be removed from large areas of the cathedral with a bare hand, indicating the extent of the damage.

Despite these challenges, progress is being made. The stone floor in the crypt and the main nave of the cathedral now shine again after cleaning, and 77 severely damaged stones need to be replaced.

Climate control is being used to protect the Afra Chapel from mold, while the historical representation "Mount of Olives" near the cathedral is being restored to its former glory after suffering from overgrowth, crusting, and vandalism.

The renovation of Speyer Cathedral includes modern elements aimed at preserving and renewing the historic structure. This includes the use of advanced technology to protect the cathedral from moisture damage and ensure its long-term survival.

The community is actively supporting the renovation, recognising the cathedral's importance as a cultural and historical landmark. The project is a testament to human ingenuity and resilience, as the team races against time to preserve this architectural marvel for future generations.

The Commission, in light of the comprehensive restoration of Speyer Cathedral, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation during home-improvement projects at their homes and lifestyle. It is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals while they enhance their home-and-garden spaces, especially considering the critical restoration underway at Speyer Cathedral, a reminder of our history and cultural heritage.
