"Previous Canadian-American Diplomat in Spotlight"

In a thought-provoking speech at a Chamber President's Series Luncheon, Frank McKenna, the current deputy chair of Wholesale Banking at TD Bank Group and a former Canadian Ambassador to the United States, provided insightful perspectives on the state of Canada's economic relationship with the U.S.

McKenna guided a comprehensive discussion on various economic topics, including trends, tariffs, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and the strained relationship with the U.S. He emphasised that while differences exist, they are not so profound that Canadians cannot communicate or work together.

Addressing the business community in Greater Sudbury, Ont., on Tuesday, McKenna expressed a hopeful message. He highlighted Canada's significant role as a major market for the United States, with the U.S. being the biggest market for Canada. This, he argued, ensures that their relationship is not one-sided.

McKenna also pointed out that a significant amount of the U.S.'s commodities come from Canada, and approximately 34% of the U.S. tourism originates from our northern neighbour. Moreover, over 1,000 nurses cross the border from Canada to work in the United States daily.

Despite the challenges, McKenna expressed optimism, stating that Canada is probably in the best shape of any country on the planet, despite global pain and suffering. He further encouraged the business community to "thank your lucky stars every day that you live in this blessed country."

Marie Litalien, the chamber president and CEO, described McKenna as a terrific and insightful speaker. Approximately 230 members of the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce attended the event.

In conclusion, Frank McKenna's speech provided a reassuring message to the business community, emphasising the strong economic ties between Canada and the U.S., and the country's resilience in the face of global challenges.
