Popular pastries find their way to Mainz with the introduction of a new café
Get ready, Mainz! A new addition to the city's culinary scene is on its way. "Simply Nata," a Portuguese delicatessen specialising in sweet and savoury pastries, is set to open its doors at the corner of Sonnengässchen in the pedestrian zone of the old town in September.
The brainchild of Rui Marinho, a native Mainzer with Portuguese parents, "Simply Nata" promises to bring a taste of Portugal to the heart of Mainz. The focus will be on daily business from 10 am to 6 pm, with a selection of classic products like olive oil, coffee, drinks, and Pastel de Nata in eight different flavours.
Pastel de Nata, a popular Portuguese custard tart, will undoubtedly be a mainstay on the menu. But that's not all – brioche croissants, both savoury and sweet, and other snacks will also be available. For those seeking a savoury option, Tosta Mista, a traditional Portuguese sandwich, will also be on offer.
The success of the Marinho family's food truck, which has been a hit at Christmas markets and the Streetfood Festival in Mainz, has led to the idea for a fixed store. The food truck will continue to be used for events like corporate parties, weddings, or street food events.
"Simply Nata" and "Simply Olive," another venture by the Marinho family, will combine their products under one roof. "Simply Olive" offers a range of products from the north of Portugal, including olive oils, pastes, soaps, and wooden products. The ethos of "Simply Olive" is that everything the tree produces is used, reflecting the family's commitment to sustainability.
Finding a suitable location for a pastelleria was not easy for the Marinho family. However, they found the perfect spot at Betzelsstraße 23, the old location of the Doc City Apotheke, where "Olá Mainz!" is now written in the shop windows.
While the exact opening date and product range are yet to be confirmed, keep an eye out for updates on local business directories, the store's official website or social media, or local news closer to your date of interest. In the meantime, get ready to savour the flavours of Portugal right here in Mainz!
With the arrival of "Simply Nata," Mainz food-and-drink scene will embrace a flavorful taste of Portugal. Beyond Pastel de Nata, the shop offers gracious pastries, such as brioche croissants and Tosta Mista sandwiches, creating a delightful home-and-garden for food enthusiasts.
