The Berlin Senate has announced plans for a new residential quarter near the Humboldt Forum on Breite Straße, aiming to create a unique living space that combines affordability, culture, and historical significance.

The upcoming project, overseen by the Mitte Housing Association (WBM), will see the construction of 65-70 modern, affordable rental apartments of various sizes. Half of these apartments will be offered at a social rent of 6.50 EUR, while the other half will be available for a net cold rent of less than ten euros.

In a move to ensure the area remains vibrant and culturally rich, ten commercial units in the new quarter will be reserved for cultural purposes. Offices and commerce areas will also be included, contributing to the overall liveliness of the district.

The design of the quarter aims to respect the historical significance of the location, blending seamlessly with the surrounding architecture. However, the specific planning architectural firms involved in the development have not been explicitly mentioned in the provided search results.

The workshop procedure for the project will commence at the beginning of August 2021. This will include an inaugural colloquium, a site inspection, and presentations from planning offices to a jury and interested citizens in a short video. The public's comments will be incorporated into the further project planning.

The already partially opened Humboldt Forum, located on Museum Island, will be a prominent neighbor to the new quarter. Another ongoing project in Mitte, the "House of One", is not far from Breiten Straße.

High-end owner-occupied apartments, such as "Stadtresidenz am Schinkelplatz" and "Kronprinzengaärten", will be constructed in close proximity to the subsidized social housing, creating a diverse and inclusive living environment.

As the construction of the apartments is not related to the usual suspects such as the Unity Monument, the completion of the U-Bahn station Museumsinsel, or the planned river bath in the Spree, this residential quarter promises to be a standalone development that caters to the needs of the community.
