Peony Pruning Time: Identifying the Ideal Moment for Pruning Peonies to Extend Plant Lifespan

When it comes to pruning peonies, timing is crucial. Herbaceous peonies should be cut back in the fall, after the first frost and once the foliage has turned yellow - usually between October and November. At this time, cut the stems down to about an inch above the ground. This practice helps maintain the plant's health, prevent disease, and prepare it for robust blooming the next spring [1][3].
The importance of cutting back in the fall lies in the fact that the peony foliage helps with photosynthesis and energy storage until then. Removing it too early can reduce the plant's ability to store energy for next year.
