Parchim Theater has been producing films for eight decades.
The Young State Theatre Parchim, formerly known as "Theater am Werk," is gearing up for a significant new chapter in its history. The theatre, which was established as an interim theatre in 1946, has undergone numerous transformations over the years, culminating in its recent merger with the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater and its renaming in 2016.
The theatre's roots can be traced back to 1948, when it became the District Theatre, and then the State Theatre in 1949. In the following years, the ensemble grew, and its reach extended beyond its local region. This expansion continued throughout the decades, with temporary cooperations with theatres in Stralsund/Greifswald from 2008 to 2011, and the Volkstheater Rostock from 2011 to 2014.
The theatre's history is rich with milestones. In the summer of 1945, under the leadership of Claire Schulz, the "Colorful Stage Parchim" was founded. The first performances took place in the former Hotel Graf Moltke, with a podium stage in the adjacent ballroom. The "Colorful Stage Parchim" marked a unique period in the theatre's history, with the first performances including a singspiel by Claire Schulz based on the fairy tale "The Red Shoes."
Throughout the 1950s, under the leadership of Hans Ohlhoff, the State Theatre expanded to include drama, orchestra, music theatre, choir, and ballet. By the 1960s and 1970s, up to 130 employees were active at the State Theatre in Parchim.
In 2018, the state took over the sponsorship of both locations, securing the future of the theatre as a producing location. Urgent construction measures were implemented to maintain the operating permit for the theater at Blutstraße 16. The large hall and parts of the roof had to be renovated.
The new season marks a special occasion for the theatre, as it coincides with the 800th anniversary of the city and the 80th anniversary of Parchim as a theatre location. The Young State Theatre Parchim will commence its new season on Saturday with a folk song evening titled "Es kann ja nicht immer so bleiben" (It can't always stay like this).
Thomas Ott-Albrecht, who took over the leadership of the Mecklenburgisches Landestheater Parchim in January 2023, is eager to lead the theatre into this new era. The opening of the Kulturmuhle on May 17, 2023, marked a new beginning for the theatre, and under Ott-Albrecht's leadership, the Young State Theatre Parchim is poised to continue its rich tradition of artistic excellence.
The ensemble's commitment to the arts and the community is evident in their decision to open the 2025/26 season at the theatre on September 20. This decision not only celebrates the theatre's history but also looks forward to its future, as the Young State Theatre Parchim continues to evolve and grow.
