Unveiling the Refreshed Aquarium Tour at Stralsund Sea Museum
Opening of the New Aquarium Route at the Sea Museum along 31 Becken - New Aquarium Tour Unveiled: Maritime Museum Introduces Thirty-One Basins in Its Expanded Exhibit
Stralsund's Sea Museum has revamped its aquarium tour, finally unveiled on May 5, 2025. Two groups of school students, alongside Minister-President Manuela Schwesig (SPD), were the inaugural guests to marvel at the new Gam-gam rays, sea turtles, and other aquatic creatures.
Divers in the largest tank, "Caribbean Reef," greeted Schwesig and the guests via a panel of glass highlighted by flashlights during the grand opening ceremony of the enhanced exhibit. This massive tank, packed with 800,000 liters of water, boasts a mammoth glass panel eight meters high, letting visitors gaze at artificial corals from three different gallery volumes. The entire glass behemoth, 60 tons heavy and transported from the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan, is about half a meter thick.
The tour introduces 30 fresh tanks, plus one refurbished one, taking visitors on a journey through various underwater worlds from the Fiji Islands, Australia, and California. In the California kelp forest, strikingly colored anemones share the screen with California horn sharks, while the water temperature mirrors the Pacific's characteristic coolness. Contrastingly, the Hawaii tanks shelter tropical marine life thriving at a balmy 25°C.
The Fiji Islands tank is strewn with white sand and vivid rocks, housing homegrown Gam-gam rays. Before leaving, visitors cross paths with the old-timers, the turtles trio of Frieda, Käthe, and Naila, who have been the museum's cherished companions for decades.
Frieda, Käthe, and Naila, along with fellow aquarium inhabitants, resumed their former abode following their temporary residence in the Ozeaneum, another branch of the German Sea Museum.
Both the federal and state governments footed the renovation bill in the millions. The Sea Museum, situated in Stralsund's old town, positions itself as the oldest of the three German Sea Museum sites, focusing on tropical seas. It partially reopened in July 2024 after its modernization. Presently, 1.4 million liters of water combined with 45 tons of sea salt solution surge through the museum's aquariums. The total renovation cost was jointly covered by the federal and state governments, amounting to 51 million euros. A grand finale for the entire project is being planned for September. Minister-President Schwesig emphasized that the Sea Museum serves as a cultural gem and a beacon for tourists.
