Multitude of More Than Four Thousand Pupils Attend Festivities of 'Aadi Perukku' at Dr MGR Janaki Women's College
Dr. MGR Janaki Women's College recently hosted a vibrant Aadi Perukku celebration, attracting over 4000 students. The event was a testament to the institution's commitment to preserving Tamil culture and traditions.
During the celebration, students paid homage to the life-giving power of water and the goddess associated with rivers, a key aspect of Aadi Perukku. They offered turmeric water, flowers, and rice to a small pond, symbolically reenacting a traditional practice typically performed in rivers.
The students also performed the mulaipari worship, carrying earthen pots filled with sprouts from nine different types of grains and legumes. This ritual is a significant part of the Aadi Perukku customs, symbolising the hope for abundance.
In keeping with the festival's emphasis on feminine energy, prosperity, and nature's blessings, the students showcased their skills in several traditional folk dances. The performances included Devarattam, Karakattam, Puliyaattam, Oyilattam, Sakkaiyaattam, Poikaal Kuthiraiyaattam, Mayilattam, and Dance Drama.
The 'sandhai' concept, where stalls were managed by students, aimed to nurture their marketing and entrepreneurial skills. This aspect of the celebration provided an opportunity for students to sell traditional Tamil crafts and delicacies, further emphasising the college's dedication to cultural preservation.
Dr. Rajendran, Chairman of Dr. MGR Janaki College for Women, emphasised the importance of preserving tradition and roots for human progress and peace. He stated that the celebration was a small attempt towards preserving the Tamil culture.
The Aadi Perukku celebration at Dr. MGR Janaki Women's College was a replication of indigenous village celebrations, aiming to help younger generations understand the 5000-year-old Tamil tradition and pass it on to future generations. The event also included discussions on the social, cultural, and environmental significance of Aadi Perukku, as well as traditional practices, music, and dance forms of Tamil culture.
