In early 2025, Cheryl Duckworth took on a significant role as the Chair of the Appalachian Mountain Club's (AMC) Board of Directors. Growing up in New Jersey, Duckworth was an avid soccer player and skier. Her love for the outdoors, however, was nurtured by her husband, James, who introduced her to hiking and camping. Today, Cheryl, James, and their two daughters frequently enjoy hiking, skiing, and climbing, particularly in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Duckworth, who finds being outdoors helps her feel connected, grateful, and grounded, is using her position to support AMC's 2025 summer match campaign. Along with four other donors, she and her husband have partnered to offer a dollar-for-dollar match on all gifts to AMC's Annual Fund, up to a total of $435,000. This means that if the campaign's goal of raising $435,000 in donations is reached, the Appalachian Mountain Club will receive a total of $870,000 this year.
This generous gift incentive aims to galvanise donor support and contribute to AMC's efforts to protect outdoor places and connect people to nature from Maine to Virginia. Duckworth's dedication to this cause is evident, as she plans to spend her summer exploring the great outdoors of Maine, with plans for gravel biking and hiking.
AMC, with its extensive understanding of the habitats within the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions from a conservation standpoint, and its facilities that connect people to the outdoors across a large part of the eastern seaboard, is a unique and powerful partner for other organisations in conservation and climate-related work.
Duckworth's involvement in AMC's summer match campaign underscores her belief that it is important for people to help organisations like AMC do what they need to do. The deadline for the Summer Match is August 31, giving donors the opportunity to make their gifts go twice as far.
As the summer progresses, Duckworth hopes that AMC will continue its conservation work in the Pleasant River headwaters in Maine, preserving these natural spaces for future generations to enjoy.
