Luxembourg to Demolish AOK Building in April, Create Green Plaza by September
The City of Luxembourg has announced the demolition of the former AOK building in Hürth-Hermülheim, set to commence between late April and early May 2025. The project, part of the 'Lebensader Lux' urban development, aims to create a new building and plaza with a water feature and greenery. The demolition will prioritize environmental and resident considerations, with a target completion date of the end of September 2025.
The demolition process will proceed floor by floor, from top to bottom, using a combination of machinery and manual demolition to minimize vibrations. This method ensures minimal disruption to residents and neighboring properties. The demolition will also consider the environment, with potentially hazardous materials and recyclable materials disposed of professionally and separately.
The City of Luxembourg has partnered with RWTH Aachen for a research project. Selected materials such as gratings, sheet metal elements, bricks, windows, and benches will be repurposed for this project. Before demolition begins, a public auction will be held to sell remaining furniture and equipment.
The demolition of the former AOK building is expected to completely clear the site by the end of September 2025. The project aims to create a new building and plaza with a water feature and greenery, contributing to the 'Lebensader Lux' urban development. No additional road closures beyond the existing closure of Luxemburger Straße are necessary.
