Leipzig Zoo Modernization Concluded by 2028 - Leipzig Zoo's Remodeling Project Set for Completion in 2028

Get ready to marvel at the latest transformations coming your way at the Leipzig Zoo by 2028! Director Jörg Junhold has announced the final leg of the zoo's ambitious master plan, "Zoo of the Future," will be wrapped up by this year. A whopping 250 million euros has already been invested for the modernization.

The Final Act

The zoo has bid adieu to outdated facilities since the turn of the millennium, opting instead for modern themed worlds. Currently, three significant projects remain on the plate:

  1. Renovation of the historic terrarium
  2. Construction of "Fireland," an enclosure custom-made for seals, penguins, and sea lions
  3. "Asian Island Worlds," where large aviaries and island habitats await various Asian species

Originally, the master plan was budgeted at 200 million German marks, but higher construction costs and general inflation have necessitated a revision. Roughly 30% of the investments have come from the city of Leipzig, while the rest has been financed by Zoo Leipzig GmbH through revenue, loans, and grants.

Banner Year 2028

In 2028, the Leipzig Zoo will celebrate its 150th anniversary. Director Junhold, who has helmed the zoo since 1997, has a contract that runs through 2031.
