Princeless Kate Showcases Navy Chic at Glasgow Ship's Christening
In a navy blue ensemble reminiscent of a sailor, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, attended the christening of a new Royal Navy vessel, HMS Glasgow, alongside her husband Prince William, in Glasgow. The ceremony, which involved smashing a bottle of Scottish whiskey against the ship's hull, officially named the ship.
The traditional christening took place on a shipyard site along the River Clyde, in the presence of several hundred shipyard employees. Kate's speech at the event, "I have the honor of christening this ship HMS Glasgow. May God bless it and all who sail on it," echoed the ceremonial proceedings. She subsequently pressed a small red button to shatter a bottle of exclusive single malt whiskey from the Clydeside Distillery against the ship's side.
The distillery that produced the whiskey opened in 2017, the same year construction of HMS Glasgow began. Ever since, a portion of the proceeds from each bottle sold has been donated to Place2Be, a charity that Kate is patron to. This organization, founded in 1994, aims to support children's mental health in schools, with an unparalleled reach and impact over three decades. Over 70% of schools in the UK have received mental health support, training, or resources from Place2Be. To date, it has helped over 400,000 children and young people develop essential coping skills and thrive.
Kate chose a nautical-themed outfit for the occasion. She wore a navy blue coat dress with white stripes from British brand Suzannah London, paired with a coordinating hat by Philip Treacy – a piece she first wore at the Trooping the Colour parade in 2024. Prince William complemented her look in a classic navy blue suit, white shirt, and tie.
The royal couple shared several photos and videos from their Glasgow engagement, stating on Instagram, "It's an honor to attend the christening of HMS Glasgow today. Everything looks shipshape!" The caption concluded with a conventional sailor's farewell, "Fair winds and following seas to HMS Glasgow!"
