Initial Findings Unveiled

In the heart of Mainz, the Rheingoldhalle (Entrance C) will be the venue for an exciting event on Tuesday, August 26, from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The Mainz Development Agency (MAG) has announced the final event of the citizen dialogue, inviting all interested Mainz residents to attend.

The transformation of Jockel-Fuchs-Platz into a "green oasis" with play elements, gastronomy, and events has been the greatest desire from a survey conducted earlier this year. The survey, which saw 258 Mainz residents participate between January 31 and February 20, 2025, also highlighted the need for improved staying quality, environment and climate considerations, and accessibility.

Ralf Sadowski, CEO of MAG, stated that Prof. Dr. Constanze Petrow, a landscape architect and professor at the University of Geisenheim, will combine these suggestions into a "desired image of the future for the square." Prof. Dr. Petrow will present the results of the participation process at the finissage on August 26.

The proposed designs emphasize creating a vibrant, welcoming space with abundant greenery and improved amenities to foster social interaction and community activities. Key elements of the plan include:

  1. Enhanced Greenery: Introducing more plants, trees, and green landscaping to soften the urban environment and provide natural shade and visual appeal, turning the square into a small urban park.
  2. Seating and Gathering Areas: Installing comfortable and varied seating options to encourage people to linger, relax, and meet, with flexible spaces that can accommodate different group sizes.
  3. Improved Accessibility and Connectivity: Enhancing pathways and entry points to ensure easy access for pedestrians and bicycles, linking the square better with surrounding neighborhoods and public transport.
  4. Multi-use Space: Designing the area to support a range of activities, from quiet rest spots to event hosting, possibly including spaces for small markets, cultural events, or community gatherings.
  5. Sustainable Features: Incorporating environmentally friendly materials and design elements that promote sustainability, such as permeable surfaces for rainwater management.

The desired transformation also includes a safe public space that serves as a connecting element between the city center and the Rhine. After the presentation of the "images of the future," a urban planning and open space design realization competition will be launched based on the suggestions. Further suggestions can be made during an evening event, and discussion is encouraged.

Experts, administrative staff, and citizens from all districts have been meeting to discuss the ideas, and after an initial presentation of the "images of the future," a vote was held on the desired priorities. The aim of the transformation is to make the square a "climate-friendly place of relaxation" and a "lively meeting point."

Join us at the Rheingoldhalle on August 26 to learn more about the plans for Jockel-Fuchs-Platz and share your thoughts on the desired transformation. All interested Mainz residents are invited to attend.
