The Ninth Wave of Indie Cinema: American Independent Film Festival (AIFF) Arrives in Romania

Gear up for the ninth edition of the American Independent Film Festival (AIFF), shining a spotlight on independent productions hailing from North America. Set to roll between June 6 and June 14, the event will kick off in Bucharest and Bran Castle, with additional screenings planned in Cluj, Iași, Timișoara, Sibiu, and other cities yet to be announced.

As part of its partnership with Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS), AIFF is looking to diversify the cultural landscape and promote film education across the country.

The star-studded roster for this edition includes Gia Coppola's The Last Showgirl, headlined by Pamela Anderson. Making her long-awaited return to the limelight, Anderson portrays a Las Vegas dancer who finds her future precarious as the establishment she's known for 30 years closes down. Sharing the silver screen with Anderson is none other than Jamie Lee Curtis, who garnered a BAFTA nomination for her performance.

Another captivating title on the program is Gazer, the directorial debut of Ryan J. Sloan, starring Ariella Mastroianni as a young mother battling a rare time-perception disorder. As she embarks on a daredevil job to support her family, she grapples with the unforeseen challenges that follow.

Cristian Mungiu, AIFF's director, emphasized that the festival will present an opportunity for viewers to discover movies that normally go unnoticed at major film festivals. This year's selection, according to Mungiu, explores themes of reinvention, memory, and community, which are integral to contemporary American cinema.

More details about the AIFF festival program will be announced soon. Stay tuned!

(For curious minds: Although the exact timeline of events remains unconfirmed, one can speculate that the festival is likely set for May 2025, following the screening of notable titles like The Last Showgirl at film festivals in Toronto, San Sebastián, Zurich, Cannes, Sitges, and Deauville. The festival's primary focus on independent films from North America sets it apart from other contemporary film festivals.)
