Increased camping costs: further price hikes observed
On the Rhine and Ruhr: Camping Costs Keep Rising, But Guests Aren't Phased
Prices for overnight stays on campsites in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have climbed again this year, according to data from the Statistical Office of NRW. But this rise in costs hasn't dampened the enthusiasm for camping breaks. Let's dive into the details.
So, what's the skinny? Camping costs in NRW have increased by 4.5% compared to last year, and they're 37.7% higher than they were in 2015. Yet, more people are choosing to camp in NRW than ever before. In 2024, there were over 997,000 guest arrivals and around 2.65 million overnight stays on campsites across the region, which is a 5% increase from the previous year.
Now, you might be wondering how these numbers stack up against the overall inflation rate. Consumer prices have risen by 26.1% compared to 2015, but the cost of camping gear and motorhomes has increased even more significantly, by 43%! Prices for camping equipment and outdoor essentials have risen by 24.3%.
Despite these price hikes, it seems that campers are still finding their way to NRW. The most popular campsites, like Weberhof-Münster Glamping and Pipowagen Jasmijn, are appreciated for their cleanliness, amenities, and locations. For a simpler but still enjoyable camping experience, Campingplatz Münster offers well-kept facilities and easy access to nearby attractions, all at a lower price point.
Travelers from overseas make up around 350,000 overnight stays on NRW campsites each year, with many heading to the Aachen urban region. The average length of stay for guests without permanent campsites was 2.7 days last year, while the district of Viersen saw the longest average stays with 6.7 overnight stays. On the other hand, the Märkischer Kreis had the shortest average stays, with guests spending 1.7 nights on campsites.
In short, the popularity of camping in NRW continues to soar, despite the rising costs. Whether you're in search of a luxury glamping experience or a more budget-friendly campsite, NRW has got you covered!
