A Vibrant Transformation: Christine Markatos Lowe Breaths New Life into a L.A. Home

In the heart of Los Angeles, a Mediterranean-style house built in the late '90s has undergone a remarkable transformation. The project, led by designer Christine Markatos Lowe, aimed to breathe new life into a property that had been unoccupied by its owner for the past 20 years.

The homeowner, with a penchant for jewel tones, played a significant role in shaping the design. Raspberry pink accents, a delicious contrast with the blues and greens, can be found in almost every room, creating a cohesive yet vibrant space.

One of the most notable changes was the reconfiguration of the room functions. A bedroom was eliminated to create a large primary closet, and the back of the house was opened to exterior spaces. This decision not only expanded the living area but also allowed for a better connection with the outdoors.

The dining room was adorned with Farrow & Ball Helleborus wallpaper, adding a soft and calming touch to the space. Vintage Chinoiserie features throughout the home, adding a touch of pattern and uniqueness to each room.

The kitchen, originally dark and dated, was modernized with skylights and a geometric glass tile backsplash. The design focused on entertaining, with a clear line of sight from the island to the television and a wall connecting it to the adjacent family room. Warm gold fixtures and fittings offset the crisp whites, blues, and greens, creating a colour scheme that matches the rest of the home.

Custom marble mosaics and glass tiles were selected for the kitchen and bathrooms, contributing to the richness of the design. European vendors such as Dedar, Jim Thompson, and Claremont provided fabrics for the remodel, adding to the overall opulence of the space.

A small brass table, similar to one featured in the study, was used to add a touch of warmth to the cooler colour scheme in various rooms. Gold pendant lights were added above the kitchen island, further enhancing the warm and inviting atmosphere.

The heavy stair design was transformed into something light and airy, improving the flow of the house. Symmetry issues in the long entrance hall were corrected, allowing for a sight line from the front to the back door.

Upstairs, the master bedroom offers a relaxing retreat with cool-toned hues, providing a contrast to the vivid pops of raspberry pinks found in other rooms.

The project, carried out by designers Kelly Wearstler and Brad Ford in collaboration with Choate Architects, has successfully transformed the once bland and dated home into a vibrant and cohesive space, a testament to Christine Markatos Lowe's design prowess.
