Residents of cities and districts in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, have shared their views on the factors that positively and negatively impact their quality of life. A recent resident survey, conducted from May 23 to June 22, involved 16,664 participants, with the city of Rostock receiving the highest overall rating of 6.35.

One of the key positives identified is the affordable real estate, with lower property prices and larger plots with garden spaces creating opportunities for homeownership. The beautiful landscapes and natural environment, along with a strong sense of community, also contribute to a higher quality of life.

However, the survey also highlighted several challenges. Rural depopulation and demographic changes have been identified as a concern, as the area faces challenges with population decline, which can lead to reduced services and social isolation. Stress among care workers and health-related challenges associated with aging are also significant issues.

In terms of specific categories, the results show that the cleanliness, leisure/recreation, quality of life, security, and family/children categories are well-rated. On the other hand, the area of gastronomy proves to be the lowest point in the survey with a value of 4.59.

The city of Schwerin has a value of 6.17, while the city of Rostock achieves the highest value of 7.33 in the quality of life category. The district of Vorpommern-Greifswald ranks 10th with a value of 5.73. Nordwestmecklenburg and Vorpommern-Rügen follow with 7.17 and 7.16 respectively. The district of the Prignitz has a value of 5.93, and the district of North West Mecklenburg has a value of 6.06.

Concerns about wind turbines, doctor shortage, poor shopping opportunities, integration problems, right-wing violence, dangers for cyclists, nature destruction, and neglected parks were felt to burden the quality of life in the region.

Efforts to strengthen social support and mitigate stress, especially in health care, are ongoing in the region. The survey results provide valuable insights for policymakers and community leaders to address these challenges and continue to improve the quality of life for residents in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Affordable real estate, with its lower property prices and home-and-garden opportunities, contributes positively to the lifestyle of residents in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Unfortunately, the negative impact of challenges such as rural depopulation, doctor shortages, and neglected parks on the quality of life in the region is also significant.
