Historic Fire Island Pines Bamboo House, Once Owned by Jane Fonda's Stylist, Now Available for Rent
A historic house on Fire Island Pines, once owned by the late Paul McGregor, has been beautifully restored and is now available for rent. The house, known for its unique bamboo interior, has a fascinating history and a recent makeover by August West and her friends.
The house was originally built by renowned architect Horace Gifford, whose modernist designs characterize the Fire Island Pines. Paul McGregor, a hair stylist known for giving Jane Fonda her iconic shag cut for the film Klute, bought the sandy parcel in the 1960s for just $6,000 and built a retreat for his family of eight.
McGregor, an artist in his own right, covered every surface of the house with bamboo, earning it the nickname 'The Bamboo House'. His granddaughter, August West, spent summers at the house and decided to restore it in 2021. West and her friends took a DIY approach, reupholstering furniture and creating their own decorative pieces. Despite the lack of information about the original artist who renovated the house in 2021, the results of West's efforts are evident in the charming, updated interior.
The restored Horace Gifford beach house is now available for rent on Airbnb, offering visitors a chance to stay in a piece of Fire Island Pines history. With its unique bamboo interior and modern updates, the house is a perfect blend of the past and present, ready to create new memories for its guests.
