Hazardous Material Incident Safely Resolved on A23 Motorway
A significant hazardous material incident unfolded on the A23 motorway (direction Norden) at the Steinburg rest area on Saturday, 06 September 2025. Over 130 emergency services personnel worked tirelessly for around ten hours to contain and resolve the situation, ensuring no public danger or injuries occurred.
The incident was triggered by a pungent smell emanating from a loaded sea container during a routine customs check. Upon investigation, two damaged drums containing an insecticide were discovered on the final pallet, identified as the source of the smell. These drums were carefully transferred to airtight stainless steel overpacks by personnel in chemical protective suits, who unloaded the container's contents cautiously.
The Steinburg rest area was closed during the operation, but traffic on the A23 continued uninterrupted. The identity of the incident commander, reported by the Pinneberg District Fire Brigade Association, remains undisclosed to the public.
The prompt response and diligent work of the emergency services ensured that the hazardous material incident was resolved safely and efficiently. No injuries were reported, and there was no danger to the public at any time. The cause of the incident was traced back to damaged drums containing an insecticide, which were properly contained and removed.
