Looking to add some fun, non-scary Halloween decorations to your home? Look no further! These simple paper lanterns are perfect for both indoor and outdoor use, and they're easy enough for kids and adults to make together.
Admittedly, I've been a bit behind on my Halloween decorating this year. All I've managed to put out so far is a wreath on the front door, some skeletons on the bench, a small Dracula inside the door, a Halloween felt ball garland on the mantel, and some unadorned pumpkins on the porch. But fear not! I've come up with a quick and easy solution to upgrade my decorations—DIY paper lanterns!
These lanterns are perfect for young trick-or-treaters who don't want anything too scary, like my little neighbor friend Ronan. They are easy, fast to make, and not expensive. Plus, you can recycle the bags or save them for next year.
Now, I know not everyone is an artist, so I've got you covered! I have templates for you to use, including eight different designs: a pumpkin, bat, ghost, skull, owl, hand coming out of the ground, black cat, and spider. Use as many or as few designs as you like – or go ahead and freehand it if you prefer!
Here's what you'll need:
- Paper bags (white preferred, but brown will work)
- Black permanent markers
- Flameless votives (do NOT use regular votives with paper bags – always opt for battery-operated)
- Templates (if you'd like to use them)
Follow the instructions below to create your own spooktacular paper lanterns:

- 3 white paper bags
- 3 flameless votives
Instructions:
- If using a template, print it out and gather your paper bags and permanent markers.
- Use the black marker to draw faces or designs on the paper bags.
- Open the paper bags and place a flameless votive inside.
- Line your sidewalk or walkway with your finished lanterns for a cute and festive look.
