Gunnersbury Park's £340k Boost: Historic Buildings Revitalised

Gunnersbury Park in West London is undergoing a significant revitalisation, with a £340,000 award from Highways England. The 75-hectare park, jointly owned by Ealing and Hounslow Councils and managed by Gunnersbury Estate 2026 CIC, is set to transform its historic buildings into cultural and artistic facilities.

The Gunnersbury 2026 Masterplan outlines three phases for the park's regeneration. Phase One, completed in 2018, restored the Large Mansion and transformed it into a museum. Now, Phase Two is underway, focusing on the Small Mansion and Stable buildings. Highways England has contributed £340,000 towards the design costs of these threatened structures.

Highways England's Principal Cultural Heritage Advisor, Jim Hunter, expressed delight in contributing to the scheme's success. He said, 'We're thrilled to support the revitalisation of Gunnersbury Park. Our funding is helping to restore three threatened buildings into cultural and artistic facilities.' Emily Gee, Historic England's Regional Director, also praised the transformation, stating, 'It's wonderful to see derelict buildings being turned into community facilities.'

The additional funding for Phase Two, provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will finance the repair designs starting from 2021-22 and lasting several years. The multi-million-pound sports hub planned for the park will offer various sports and activities, further enhancing the community's experience. With 22 listed buildings, eight of which were at risk in 2009, the Gunnersbury revitalisation is a significant step towards preserving the park's rich history and ensuring its future as a vibrant community space.
