In Russia, September 1st, known as Knowledge Day, is a significant cultural occasion marked by school ceremonies and parental involvement. However, it's not a public holiday by law, and workers do not have automatic leave rights for this day.

If you're a worker in Russia and wish to be absent on September 1st to accompany your child to school, you'll need to rely on existing leave options approved by your employer.

One option is to request annual paid leave through your employer's usual leave application process. If paid leave is not available, you may seek employer permission for unpaid leave or leave without pay. Some workers may also be able to take a day off for family reasons, depending on company policies or collective agreements.

Another option is to negotiate flexible hours or remote work arrangements on that day to accommodate accompanying your child.

It's worth noting that if you're hired to work on a holiday, you can choose an additional day off instead of overtime pay and use it on September 1st. This rule also applies to those who donate blood, as by law, donating blood grants an additional paid day off that can be used at any time, including September 1st.

If your employer offers an additional day off for working on a holiday as a negotiated benefit, you may also be able to link your annual paid leave to September 1st with their consent.

It's essential to check with your employer if such a guarantee exists in your organization. If your employer does not provide an additional day off, you can request unpaid leave on September 1st.

However, granting unpaid leave on September 1st would result in lost salary. Therefore, it's advisable to communicate with your employer well in advance to arrange time off for accompanying your child on this important school day.
