grandfather clock, specifically manufactured by Ridgeway
In 2012, a rare find was listed on a local for-sale site - a well-preserved Ridgeway Hamilton Country grandfather clock. Originally manufactured by the Pulsaski Furniture Company in 1996, this clock is in excellent condition with minor tarnishing, showcasing the timeless elegance of traditional craftsmanship.
The Ridgeway Hamilton Country model is a testament to the brand's commitment to combining classic clockmaking aesthetics with solid, decorative cabinetry suitable for formal interior decor. Standing 83 inches tall, this clock features a scalloped bonnet crown, functional blue moon dial with constellation, 5-rod Westminster chime with shut-off, stately columns with brass base and caps, raised Arabic numerals, oak solids and veneers, brass lyre pendulum with a 10 5/8 polished bob, and access panels on each side.
Ridgeway Clocks, established in the early 20th century, gained a reputation for producing high-quality tall-case clocks with traditional craftsmanship combined with modern manufacturing techniques. The brand's clocks, including the Hamilton Country model, were prized for their elegant wood finishes (frequently cherry) and craftsmanship, making them popular in middle to upper-middle-class American homes.
Despite modern innovations in timekeeping, Ridgeway grandfather clocks remained sought after for their classic aesthetic and mechanical movements, continuing a long tradition of grandfather clock heritage. The company traces roots back to the early 1900s and maintained production through the 20th century, with a notable presence in the 1990s.
Transporting a modern grandfather clock requires careful consideration, as the cost should be factored in beforehand. It is recommended to consider travel time, disassembly/set-up time, shop supplies, and tax. Once set up on a hard surface, preferably level, the Ridgeway Hamilton Country clock runs very well and requires minimal maintenance, with the option to replace the movement rather than repair it if it fails.
The Ridgeway Hamilton Country clock was initially advertised as having a quality Keininger movement, but it actually has a Hermle movement. This clock, now owned by the Howard Miller group of companies, was purchased by the Howard Miller Clock Company in 2004. While the term "grandfather clock" is not commonly used among clock collectors and enthusiasts, the Ridgeway Hamilton Country clock represents a blend of American heritage clockmaking in the late 20th century, notable for décor as much as function, preserving the tradition of tall-case clocks as both timekeepers and statement furniture pieces.
