Gießen's Wastewater Plant to Save 1.8M kWh Annually After Modernization

Gießen's wastewater treatment plant is undergoing a significant modernization project. The goal? To enhance energy efficiency and reduce its environmental impact. The plant is set to complete this process by the end of October 2025, with over 800 aerator membranes installed.

The plant, which has a total of eight aeration basins, each holding 4 million liters and measuring 5 meters deep by 40 meters long, is undergoing a phased modernization. Due to the daily wastewater volume, only one basin can be taken out of operation each year. The first six basins have already been upgraded with new aeration systems, saving a substantial 1,885,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This is equivalent to the yearly electricity consumption of 1,450 inhabitants.

The new aeration systems, installed since 2023, are energy-optimized. They reduce the plant's ecological footprint and increase operational safety. The modernization aims to conserve resources and ensure high-quality wastewater treatment. The final two basins are scheduled for modernization in 2026 and 2027.

By the end of 2025, all eight basins will have been modernized, with over 800 aerator membranes installed. This significant upgrade is expected to bring substantial energy savings and improved operational safety to Gießen's wastewater treatment plant.
