Germany Launches €1.7M Project to Boost Carbon Removal Using Biochar and Rock Weathering
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research has launched a collaborative project, 'Pyrogenic Carbon and Mineral Weathering' (PyMiCCS), with a €1.7 million grant. This initiative, involving the University of Hamburg, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences, aims to explore innovative methods for carbon dioxide removal.
The project focuses on two key strategies: using biochar and accelerating the weathering of ground rock on fields. Biochar, a type of charcoal, can bind nitrogen and phosphorus, preventing them from polluting groundwater, and fix harmful heavy metals, safeguarding plants. Meanwhile, rock flour can fertilize depleted fields, boosting crop yields.
The University of Hamburg, through its Faculty of Earth System Sciences and the Center for Earth System Research, is leading the project. It is set to run until October 2025, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The project's goal is to investigate how these two methods can be combined to enhance their potential synergistic effects.
While the project is distinct from the 'Science with the City' initiative, both aim to foster dialogue between scholars and citizens in the Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld area. The 'Science with the City' project, also funded by the BMBF, seeks to develop spatial concepts to facilitate this interaction.
The PyMiCCS project, with its €1.7 million funding, underscores the German government's commitment to exploring innovative climate solutions. By investigating the combined use of biochar and rock flour, the project seeks to enhance carbon dioxide removal methods, a crucial step in protecting the climate. Despite the challenge of limiting global warming to well below two degrees, such initiatives offer hope for mitigating climate change.
