Ashley Furniture Undergoes £600k Refurbishment in Newton Abbot
In 2019, Ashley Furniture, a family-owned furniture retail business established over 160 years ago in the South West, underwent a significant refurbishment project worth £600k. The Newton Abbot premises, one of the first 'out of town' units in the area and a state-of-the-art design at the time, was given a modern makeover.
Peter Harding, the Managing Director and the 6th generation of the Harding family, ensured that only local contractors were engaged for the project. Nine individual companies, including Pinnacle Architecture, MPK Developments, Delmon Group, Newton & Newton Architects, Woodside Developments, Modplan, Plymouth Scaffold Services, Webb Associates Consulting Engineers, Lacy & Partners LLP, Exotic Landscapes, and JDP Construction, were involved in the redevelopment of the warehouse.
The extensive renovation included recladding the external building, improving energy efficiency, and interior renovation. The project also included upgrades such as new ceiling, improved disabled access, upgraded lighting to LED technology, and new energy-efficient boilers. Notably, Southfield Windows replaced all windows and doors as part of the energy efficiency improvements.
Remarkably, the store remained open during the six-month refurbishment with minimal disruption to customers and staff. The commitment to maintaining service during the renovation was appreciated by Dan Plumb, an employee at the Newton Abbot store, who received praise from local customer Christine Mansfield for his exceptional service.
