Harburg Food Bank to Move by Year's End, Faces Increased Costs and Rent

The Harburg Food Bank, a vital community resource, is set to relocate to new premises by the end of the year. However, the move, scheduled to take place at Buxtehuder Straße 56, "Seckerdiek-Haus" next to the Maxi store, is reportedly facing challenges and increased costs.

Sabine Pena, the director of the Harburg Food Bank, has expressed her disappointment due to a lack of district support for the move. In contrast, the relocation of animal shelters in other districts is reportedly supported.

One of the significant challenges the Food Bank faces is the cost of renovations. In addition to the expenses related to moving inventory and leasing the new facilities, the Food Bank will incur additional renovation costs. Notably, the new cold room for food storage will cost 20,000 euros, a portion of which will be covered by a generous donation of 10,000 euros from the Rotary Club Hamburg-Harburg.

The Rotary Club's donation was presented to the Food Bank by six of its representatives – Bernd Westermann, Torsten Schumacher, Thorsten Hamel, Luhr Weber, Michael Witthöft, and Heinz Lührs – during a visit to the Food Bank. The event, the 14th Duck Race, took place in June at an outdoor mill and attracted 2000 visitors and featured 3000 rubber ducks.

Despite the generous donation, the Food Bank will face an increase in monthly rent from 400 euros to 6,500 euros at the new location, which does not provide support from the district. This increase in costs could potentially lead to a change in the price for food distribution, with Sabine Pena anticipating an increase from the current 2 euros for two boxes to 3-4 euros.

The old location of the Harburg Food Bank will be demolished, with a new building for the drug facility Abrigado and social housing to be constructed on the site. Sabine Pena and Wolfgang Naujoks represent the Harburg Food Bank and have been working diligently to navigate these challenges and ensure a smooth transition for the community they serve.

As the Food Bank prepares for its move, it is crucial to monitor local reports or official Food Bank communications for precise information about the costs, challenges, and impact on food distribution prices. The community's support will be essential in helping the Food Bank overcome these challenges and continue its vital work in the Harburg area.

The Food Bank's move to Buxtehuder Straße 56, "Seckerdiek-Haus" next to the Maxi store, may necessitate a shift in their 'other' expenses, including the costly renovation of a cold room and an increase in monthly rent. In light of these financial challenges, the Food Bank might explore alternative 'sustainable-living' solutions, such as adopting energy-efficient appliances or implementing recycling programs at their new home-and-garden.
