Frida Kahlo's Museum Set to Unveil in Mexico City Come September
Frida Kahlo's Legacy to be Showcased in Enhanced Museum Set for September Opening
Mexico City will welcome a new cultural attraction this September, as a museum dedicated to the life and art of Frida Kahlo — Museo Casa Kahlo — opens its doors in the historic Coyoacán district. The museum will reside on a family-owned property, next to the renowned Casa Azul where Kahlo was born, raised, and lived for much of her life.
The museum will occupy the Casa Roja, a private residence previously owned by Kahlo's parents and passed down through generations. The property will be transformed into an art institution by the Rockwell Group, a renowned New York-based architecture firm. The decision to donate the property was made by Kahlo's close relative, grandniece Mara Romeo Kahlo, who professed, "Frida's legacy belongs to the world, but it begins here-on this land, in these homes, and in the culture that shaped her."
Alongside Casa Azul, Muséo Casa Kahlo aims to cast light on Kahlo's beginnings by featuring exhibitions and rotating shows of contemporary art, with a particular focus on Mexican, Latin American, and women artists. Adán García Fajardo has been appointed as the museum director and will oversee these awe-inspiring initiatives.
Funding for the museum was provided by the recently established nonprofit Fundación Kahlo. This foundation serves to preserve the artist's legacy and advance her causes by promoting Mexican, Indigenous, and Latin American art and culture. The organization will support the museum and related public efforts, such as the Kahlo Art Prize and a grant program. Rick Miramontez, a veteran of public relations, will chair Fundación Kahlo.
For those visitors desiring to delve deeper into Kahlo's life and art, Museo Casa Kahlo promises exhibitions encompassing her influences, artistic process, and extensive legacy. As the opening date approaches, further details regarding the museum's collections and programming will likely become available.
