Next Tuesday, the 19th of August, the Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) will be hosting a field day at the Tim Goedken farm near Hopkinton. The event, which runs from 10 am to noon, is free to attend and open to the public.

The Goedken farm, located at 2856 Quarter Road, is home to a dairy and 700 acres of conventional and organic crop ground and pasture. Tim Goedken started his own dairy in 1992 and currently manages a dairy cattle herd of 200. His grown daughters, Sarah, Tara, and Courtney, also help manage the farm.

The Goedkens are renowned for their innovative farming practices, particularly their double-cropping method. This practice, which involves growing rye, rye straw, and sudangrass straw, has been profitable, grossing $1,400 per acre.

The field day event will include a tour of the dairy and crop ground, offering attendees a unique opportunity to learn about sustainable farming techniques. The tour will conclude with a visit to their new calf barn. After the dairy tour, there will be a caravan to a field where the Goedkens are double-cropping rye with sorghum-sudangrass.

Tim Goedken and his family are committed to conservation leadership, with Nathan Goedken receiving the Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award for their efforts in cover crops and no-till farming. This commitment to conservation and sustainability is likely to be a theme during the field day.

The event encourages visitors to come with questions, making it a great opportunity for those interested in practical, conservation-oriented farming to learn directly from the Goedken family. To RSVP for the event, call 515-232-5661.
