Brighton & Hove City Council Considering Purchase of Unoccupied Apartments for Affordable Housing
In a move to increase the supply of affordable housing in the city, Brighton & Hove City Council is considering the purchase of the unoccupied Apartments in Whitehawk Way.
The proposal, made by the Labour group on the council, was discussed at a meeting of the Housing & New Homes Committee two weeks ago. Councillor Gill Williams, chair of the committee, reiterated the committee's commitment to increasing affordable housing in the city.
If approved, the purchase of the Apartments would provide an additional 23 good quality constructed flats to the city. The development consists of a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, with two wheelchair-accessible properties. The affordable housing element of the Apartments would increase the city's council-rented homes by 15 units.
The flats, which were built by a private developer but have never been occupied, could also be let to existing council tenants who want to downsize, freeing up larger family homes.
No housing associations expressed interest in purchasing the 15 homes, leading the developer to review options and enter into discussions with the council about a whole block purchase. The council's Home Purchase Policy could be used to fund the potential purchase of the Apartments.
The report to the Housing & New Homes Committee highlights the potential significant boost of 38 more good quality constructed flats that the purchase of the Apartments could provide. The final decision on the purchase of the flats will be made by the Strategy, Finance and Regeneration Committee.
If the purchase of the Apartments goes ahead, it will be part of the city's ongoing commitment to increasing the supply of affordable housing. Councillor Williams stated that the committee's recommendation to purchase a block of 38 new flats is a step towards achieving this goal.
The council's Home Purchase Policy allows for the council to buy back former council homes and, in this case, privately developed homes. The purchase and subsequent rental of the flats is a testament to the council's dedication to providing affordable housing for its residents.
The Apartments are located in Whitehawk Way, an area that has seen significant regeneration in recent years. The purchase of the Apartments would further contribute to the ongoing revitalisation of the area, providing much-needed affordable housing for the city's residents.
