Exploring the forests of Lübeck on thirty excursions
New Forest Guide Opens Up Lübeck's Natural Beauty
Lübeck, a historic town with UNESCO World Heritage status, is well-known for its cityscape and waterfront. However, its outskirts offer a different kind of charm – natural areas suitable for hiking and outdoor activities. The Lübeck Forest Guide, developed by BUND Lübeck, aims to help visitors explore these hidden gems.
The implementation of the guide was made possible by the Lübeck Sparkassen Foundation. Created by Ulrike Schröder and Reinhard Degener, the guide invites the population to experience nature on 30 hiking tours through the Lübeck city forest. Information boards are currently being set up at the starting points of these tours, making it easier for visitors to embark on their forest adventures.
The guide provides detailed information on the forest's natural environment, hiking routes, and the local management concept aimed at conservation and sustainable use. It describes the forest's ecosystem, flora and fauna, historical background, and its role in the regional landscape near Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein.
Several hiking and walking trails in and around Lübeck are reviewed in the guide, with routes varying in length and difficulty. These routes give access through various parts of the forest and natural surroundings, emphasizing scenic views and biodiversity. For instance, the 54-kilometer long stage hike "Around Lübeck" offers a comprehensive exploration of the city's green spaces.
The guide also includes four cycling tours and extensive information about the development of the Lübeck forests and the internationally recognized forest management concept. This approach balances environmental protection with recreation, with the management concept aiming to strengthen the understanding of the forest as a complex ecosystem. The concept has been practiced for three decades in Lübeck.
Reinhard Degener, one of the creators of the guide, emphasized the importance of protecting the Lübeck forests and engaging in their preservation, particularly in the face of climate change. The second edition of the guide is already available, with special marking signs added to make it easier to find the routes.
Visitors can consult local forestry offices or tourism information centers in Lübeck for specific forest guides, or use digital platforms like Komoot for custom hiking routes and community insights. Management concept details are usually published by local environmental agencies or forestry departments focused on Schleswig-Holstein's natural reserves.
Organized tours and excursions often include nature walks and forest exploration as part of the cultural and natural experience around Lübeck. So whether you're a seasoned hiker or a nature enthusiast, the Lübeck Forest Guide offers an engaging and educational way to explore the beauty of Lübeck's forests.
