Free Guided Tour of Eutin Castle Garden Offers Insights into Freemasonry and Enlightenment

On July 19th, a unique opportunity awaits history enthusiasts and those interested in Freemasonry as a guided tour of Eutin Castle's garden opens its doors to the public. The tour, led by members of the "Golden Apple" lodge—the second oldest in Eutin—begins at 10 am in the castle's inner courtyard.

The tour route takes participants on a journey through the pavilion, the lime alley, the tuff stone house, the kitchen garden, and the Monopteros (Sun Temple). Along the way, visitors will gain insights into the "secret" processes behind the lodge doors, all presented in a captivating storytelling format.

The garden's design, with its geometrical forms inspired by French formal gardens, symbolizes the Enlightenment ideals and symbolic geometry that flourished during the 18th century, a period when Freemasonry was at its height. This era stressed reason, science, and individual improvement—themes deeply embedded in Freemasonry.

As you walk through the garden, you'll discover how the symmetrical patterns and carefully planned vistas reflect the Masonic use of geometry and allegory to represent the path to knowledge and personal development. The former Webertempel, part of the tour route, offers a glimpse into this rich history.

The tour culminates at the Monopteros, also known as the Sun Temple, the final destination of the tour. Here, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the Freemason's perspective on the history and symbolism of Eutin Castle's garden.

Donations for social causes are appreciated during the tour. For more information about the tour, please contact [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you there!

Embarking on the guided tour, visitors can expect to learn about the lifestyle and symbolism of Freemasonry within the tranquil setting of Eutin Castle's garden, which reflects the home-and-garden design trends of the Enlightenment period. As you stroll through the garden's geometric layout and compare its allegorical elements to the principles of Freemasonry, you'll have a chance to appreciate the connection between the past and the present.
