Experiencing the Functionality of Meta's Latest Ray-Ban Display Eyewear
Meta has announced its latest innovation, the Ray-Ban meta glasses, at its annual Connect event in Menlo Park, California. The glasses, developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban (EssilorLuxottica), are a significant step towards augmented reality.
According to Meta executives, the glasses are designed to help protect presence, offering a glanceable display that appears only when needed and disappears quickly. The display, located on the inside, righthand corner of the right lens, projects visual feedback to the wearer. The display looks like it's projected several feet in front of the wearer, providing a seamless and immersive experience.
The Ray-Ban meta glasses are slightly heavier and thicker than regular glasses, but they offer a range of practical features. Users can take and view photos, read and respond to messages, scroll Instagram Reels, take video calls, and even use live captioning and translation for conversations. The glasses also have a real-time map feature, making navigation easier.
The glasses are equipped with a "neural" wristband for navigation with subtle hand gestures. An LED light indicates when recording is in progress. However, during a demo, a button to accept a video call didn't show up on the display, and there was a minor issue with text dictation, where a word was misspelled.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that AI glasses are taking off and consumers are adopting them at a rate similar to some of the most popular consumer electronics of all time. The glasses are priced at $799 and will be available for sale in a limited number of US retail stores on September 30, with a global rollout next year.
Meta emphasizes building the glasses responsibly and educating the public about safety features. Only the wearer can see the display, ensuring privacy. The glasses can identify plants for a user, adding a fun and educational aspect to everyday wear.
The Ray-Ban meta glasses represent an early step towards augmented reality, offering a glimpse into the future of wearable technology. As Meta continues to innovate, we can expect to see more exciting developments in this field.
