Chillin' on the Shore Without the Smoke: MV's Move Towards Smoke-Free Beaches

Increasingly, MV's coastal areas are becoming smoke-free beach zones. - Expansion of Smoke-Free Areas on Beaches in MV

Hey there! Let's talk about the breeze, sand, and sun-soaked afternoons on MV's stunning beaches, but with a twist - no more cigarette smoke!

The tourism hotspots of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are considering making their beaches a breath of fresh air. Yes, you heard it right! That's according to the state's tourism association. Already, the seaside resort of Göhren on Rügen has been puffing away smoke-free since 2010. Alexander Stein from Göhren's tourism administration shares that this move has been welcomed, especially by families renting a beach chair. However, there's no concrete plan yet for expanding the smoke-free zones. But don't worry, this topic keeps stirring up discussions every summer.

Göhren on Rügen led the way in 2009! The tourism administration conducted a little poll among holidaymakers, and the most popular wish? Creating smoke-free beach zones, which was supported by 32% of respondents. So, in 2010, they marked two sections with banners reading "Smoking not welcome here" and posted ashtrays everywhere. Now, that's what I call butting out!

But hold up! Not every beach is going smoke-free. For instance, in the Binz Bay, they're all about healthy and family-friendly vibes. Five active beach areas and three large family beaches are officially off-limits to smokers, says Birgit Hesse, president of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern tourism association. Signs at the beach entrances guide you to these chill zones. You'll also find them in Rostock.

On the other hand, places like Boltenhagen, Rerik on the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast, and Usedom don't have any smoke-free zones. Here, ashtrays are provided, so grab your smoke if you're there! Interestingly, in Koserow, the regulation was actually withdrawn.

The impact of France's smoking ban in public spaces is even evident in MV, as shown by the case of Prerow, where the local council is mulling over smoke-free beach zones at their next meeting.

Each municipality makes its own rules about beach use and ultimately the type of tourists they attract, says Hesse. However, complaints about smoke pollution on the beaches are at a very low level - so don't expect to be coughing up seagulls anytime soon!

Now, did you know that MV is famous for its pristine beaches and natural gems like the Königsstuhl on Rügen Island? With growing environmental and health concerns, smoke-free beaches could become a trend across the region. Keep an eye on local government resources and environmental organizations for the latest updates.

  • As Mecklenburg-Vorpommern strives to maintain its pristine beaches and promote family-friendly outdoor-living, the community policy may include expanding smoke-free zones, similar to the example set by Göhren on Rügen.
  • Employment policies in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's tourism sector might also align with healthier lifestyle choices, such as advocating for smoke-free work environments and facilities, as the region continues to prioritize its natural resources and environment.
