Expansion of a beloved independent cinema by our team's members is possible, and we wholeheartedly support this move.
Prince Charles Cinema Eyeing Expansion with New Site in Stratford
London's beloved independent cinema, The Prince Charles Cinema (PCC), is planning to expand its horizons with a second site in Stratford, East London. The cinema has lodged a formal proposal to revitalize the long-closed Stratford Picturehouse, a move that forms part of a broader ambition to grow beyond their Leicester Square location.
The Stratford location presents an attractive opportunity due to the area's major redevelopment, influx of students, new housing, and cultural growth, making it a strategic choice for expansion. While details about the technical upgrades for the new venue are yet to be confirmed, the PCC's expansion could combine its unique programming with a first-class cinema setup.
Currently, the PCC does not offer Dolby Atmos, a premium sound system, in its Leicester Square venue. However, no public updates have confirmed whether the Stratford site will feature this technology. The focus of recent coverage has been on the acquisition, cultural context, and programming intentions, rather than specific technical upgrades.
Despite the seating being described as "old and creaky" by the PCC's editor-in-chief, Alastair Stevenson, the cinema is a haven for independent cinema lovers. It offers a range of films from underground gems to blockbuster releases, and its community feel is hard to find, especially in central London.
The PCC has faced uncertainty due to rising rent costs in the past few years, but it remains the editor-in-chief's favourite place to watch movies. The cinema has also been deemed an 'Asset to Community Value' by Westminster Council, reflecting its significant contribution to the local arts scene.
In a bid to enhance the cinema-going experience, PCC has implemented a one-film rule during movie marathons. This rule is aimed at preventing discomfort during long screenings. The new site, if it materializes, could address the outdated sound setup and seating issues, offering a more comfortable and immersive cinema experience.
The potential new cinema could be located in Stratford, possibly in the former Stratford Picturehouse site. The expansion to a second site is not yet confirmed, but it could significantly expand the PCC's reach and provide a unique cinematic experience in the heart of East London.
