Exhibition in Kuressaare Features Collaborative Artwork by Young Estonian Artists
The Estonian art collective Kvadraat has returned to Kuressaare, Saaremaa, with a new contemporary graphic art exhibition titled "As Nice as Your Neighbor." This exhibition, which takes place at Kuressaare's old Weigh Station (Lootsi 17), is the latest installment in Kvadraat's series of contemporary graphic art exhibitions.
The focus of the exhibition is on sociability, collaboration, and communication, delving into themes related to community, neighborliness, and everyday interactions within shared environments. Through graphic art, the exhibition explores social relationships and the nuances of living alongside others, often reflecting on empathy, connection, and the contrast between appearance and reality in neighborhood dynamics.
The curators of the exhibition are members of the art collective Kvadraat: Elise Marie Olesk, Marten Prei, Paul Rannik, Sandra Puusepp, and Triin Mänd. "As Nice as Your Neighbor" features works by eight young artists: Asmus Soodla, Elo Vahtrik, Irma Holm, Kail Timusk, Liisa-Lota Jõeleht, Margarita Feofanova, Maria Izabella Lehtsaar, and Sonja Sutt.
Upon closer inspection, threads begin to emerge not just between the works, but the artists themselves. The exhibition brings together artists with initially diverse and even opposing practices, creating a unique blend of perspectives that adds depth to the exhibition's themes.
"As Nice as Your Neighbor" is part of Kvadraat's contemporary graphic art exhibition series, which began last year with the debut exhibition titled "Contact," focusing on qualities such as touch, contact, and pressure. The setting of the Kuressaare Sanatoorium, a location known for hosting various cultural and artistic events, adds a unique backdrop to the themes of the exhibition, connecting the intimate exploration of community with a place of healing and reflection.
The exhibition will conclude on Monday, August 18. For those interested in contemporary graphic art and exploring themes of community, neighborliness, and everyday interactions, "As Nice as Your Neighbor" is not to be missed.
